Other series. These are worth a comment even though two-dollar bills were not included.

NBNs of series 1882 were divided into first ("brown back"), second ("date back") and third ("value back") issues. The first retained the state or territorial seals on the reverse, but the second and third issues instead used symbols generic to the whole nation. The similar National Gold Bank Notes (NGBNs) issued in the 1870s also had a state seal on the back, in practice always California.

Although many of the NBNs have the issuing bank's charter number printed repeatedly within the obverse border, the deuces do not, as this practice began with the series of 1882 and continued until the end of the large-note era. Meanwhile, the NGBNs do not have these numbers, having been issued prior to 1882.
